Setting Family Values
‘But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever: Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers. Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;’
Jer. 35:6-8
What are family values?
They are what the family believes in and they share in common. It is clearly spelt out so that there are no assumptions. Usually, it is written and placed in a conspicuous place in the home. It is also verbally reiterated to ingrain it in the hearts and minds of members of the family.
The Rechabites, in the Bible, were given specific instructions by their father and they took it as a belief and passed it down to their generation. Their generation honoured the same belief passed down to them. This is possible! Our generation can live with the values that we set in our families today.
May the Lord help us to se the right values in Jesus name. Amen.
Let me show you an example:
‘We love each other, make time for one another, support our dreams, prioritize family time, honour our special days, put people over money, put God over activities, we are vision and purpose driven’.
It is amazing how families can run with their values into their generation! It would give them when they are not home and could be the saving strength of the family in difficult days.
May we set godly values that will bless God and bless humanity in Jesus name. Amen.
